Kalimat bentuk perbuatan atau peristiwa yang sedang berlangsung pada waktu lampau ketika peristiwa tersebut terjadi, atau menyatakan perbuatan yang sedang terjadi pada waktu lampau.

PAST CONTINUOUS TENSE
(+) I/ We/ You/ They + were + Infinitife + ing
     He/ She/ It + was + Infinitife + ing

(-) I/we/you/they + were not + infinitive
     He/she/it was not + infinitive

(?) Were + I/we/you/they + infinitive ?
     Was + he/she/it + infinitive ?

a. Kalimat Positive
PAST CONTINUOUS TENSE
(+) I/ We/ You/ They + were + Infinitife + ing
      He/ She/ It + was + Infinitife + ing

Kalimat Past Continuous tense yang menyatakan suatu kejadian atau perbuatan yang sudah dimulai namun tetap berlangsung ketika kejadian peristiwa atau kejadian dan merupakan kejadian yang terjadi pada waktu lampau.

Example :

(+) When you called me, I was praying  = Ketika kamu menelpon saya , saya sedang sholat.

(+) I was studying English when you phoned me = Saya sedang belajar bahasa Inggris ketika kamu menelponku

(+) He was writing a letter to her when you called him = Dia sedang menulis surat untuk seorang perempuan saat kamu menelpon dia.

(-) While I heard afearful cry, they were waching television = Ketika aku mendengar jeritan yang menakutkan, Mereka sedang menonton televisi.

(+) We Were going to school = Kami sedang pergi kesekolah.

(+) You was studying English = Kamu sedang belajar bahasa Inggris.

(+) It was cooking = Ia sedang memasak.

(+) She was playing the piano as her mother entered the room. = Dia sedang bermain piano ketika ibunya memasuki kamar itu.

b. Kalimat Negative
PAST CONTINUOUS TENSE
(-) I/we/you/they + were not + infinitive
     He/she/it was not + infinitive

Kalimat Past Continuous tense pada kalimat negative atau kalimat menyangkal : To be was dan were ditambahkan not (n't).

Example :

(-) When you called me, I wasn't praying  = Ketika kamu menelpon saya , saya tidak sedang sholat.

(-) I was not studying English when you phoned me = Saya sedang tidak belajar bahasa Inggris ketika kamu menelponku

(-) He was not writing a letter to her when you called him = Dia sedang tidak menulis surat untuk seorang perempuan saat kamu menelpon dia.

(-) While I heard afearful cry, they weren't waching television = Ketika aku mendengar jeritan yang menakutkan, Mereka sedang tidak menonton televisi.

(-) We weren't going to school = Kami tidak sedang pergi kesekolah.

(-) You was not studying English = Kamu tidak sedang belajar bahasa Inggris.

(-) It wasn't cooking = Ia tidak sedang memasak.

(-) She wasn't playing the piano as her mother entered the room. = Dia tidak sedang bermain piano ketika ibunya memasuki kamar itu.

c. Kalimat Interrogative
PAST CONTINUOUS TENSE
(?) Were + I/we/you/they + infinitive ?
      Was + he/she/it + infinitive ? 

Example :

(?) When I called you, were you praying?  = Ketika saya menelpon kamu , apakah kamu sedang sholat?

(?) Were you studying English when you phoned me? = Apakah kamu sedang belajar bahasa Inggris ketika kamu menelponku?

(?) Was he writing a letter to her when you called him = Apakah dia sedang menulis surat untuk seorang perempuan saat kamu menelpon dia.

Time Signal atau Tanda waktu yang sering dipergunakan :
when = ketika ( biasa diikuti oleh Past Tense )
while = selagi, sementara (diikuti oleh Past continuous tense)
as = ketika
all day yesterday = sepanjang hari kemaren
the whole day last Sunday = sepanjang hari minggu yang lalu.
